The Opportunity

The School of Construction has a wide array of programming that prepares students to fill a variety of roles across all sectors of the construction industry through our apprenticeship, diploma and degree programs. Our programs are designed with industry partners, meaning our students can hit the ground running upon graduation.

The Academic Advisor reports directly to the Manager, Support Services. This role is temporary salaried. The Academic Advisors provide support for a broad range of areas including: student advocacy and advising; dissemination of program information to both external and internal contacts; supporting research, development and/or management of database systems and spreadsheets for statistical information on students, and support of student clubs and events throughout the academic year. The Academic Advisors assist the students with their progression through their respective programs.

The Role

  • Key contact for students, registrar’s office, prior learning assessment (PLAR), International Centre, and scholarship office
  • Advise students with regard to School/SAIT policies on supplemental examinations, course registration and drop/add procedures, grade appeals, scholarships, subject withdrawal procedure, program withdrawals and transfers.
  • Direct students to resources in the Learner Success Centre and student development and counselling offices as required
  • Advise applicants, current students and other interested parties with regard to admission requirements, selection, course content, fees, graduation requirements, student loan requirements, student awards, accommodations, and the transferring of post-secondary credits
  • Work with students to plan program completion taking into consideration pre-requisite requirements, major and minor requirements, elective requirements, and schedule of course offerings
  • Focus on student success by proactively working with students on probation, at-risk students, athletics, international students, etc
  • Advocate for students as required
  • Delegated signing authority for the Academic Chairs for identified academic forms.
  • Assist with management of student completion of the mandatory ethics courses
  • Advise students on employment opportunities and careers within the program and coordinate activities with the student employment office
  • Liaise with employers regarding student work experience opportunities and communicate with students about employment.

Statistical/Procedural Resource Person:

  • Track student entry and progression through a program to assess when attrition occurs and identify specific patterns which may block students in their academic progress.
  • Research and recommend students to the Student Awards Office for scholarships/bursaries

Key Communicator and Coordination of Information

  • Interface with other schools, Academic Services, Learner Services, Student Services and PLAR for program set up, student registration, program processes and student concerns.
  • Manage and coordinate logistical details regarding critical dates, events, or changing processes within SAIT and School programs and actively convey this information to students via formal meetings and written material for current and prospective students
  • Coordinate internal and external communications regarding admissions, registration, examinations, scholarships, policies, procedures, scheduling and Banner student database usage for reports/processes
  • Create and maintain currency of program information documents.
  • Act as School contact for SAIT counselors and accessibility advisors for program information and students with special needs
  • Contribute content to school-specific internal communications

Program / Student Events

  • Assist with student club activities and student events throughout the academic year.
  • Recruitment of students by attending high school information sessions, participate in mail-outs to incoming students, and working with ACs and Associate Dean on any recruitment initiatives
  • Assist with administering SIR II evaluations each term

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma with a minimum of two years’ related work experience or equivalent combination
  • Minimum of two years of relevant experience in an advising or planning role. Post-secondary, technical, or engineering experience, would be an asset.
  • Excellent computer skills in MS Office Suite of applications plus Banner Student Information System or similar system
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of personalities.
  • Strong knowledge of post-secondary education programs
  • Strong communication, able to maintain a positive attitude and excellent work ethic.
  • Ability to work autonomously and as a contributing member of a team.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student success
  • The ability to handle confidential matters in a sensitive manner
  • Conflict resolution, negotiation and problem solving skills
  • Ability to provide appropriate academic advising and ability to research facts in order to problem solve appropriately for students.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in decision making.
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to effectively handle shifting or changing priorities.
  • Strong computer skills including MS Office, scheduling software, and databases.
