Deputy Director & Associate Professor – UNSW Allens Hub for Technology, Law and Innovation
Employment Type: Full time – 35 hour per week
Duration: 1-year fixed term
Remuneration: Level D $163,732 – $179,849 full time equivalent (plus 17% superannuation and leave loading)
Location: Kensington NSW (Hybrid Flexible Working)

The UNSW Allens Hub for Technology, Law and Innovation, is an independent community of scholars based at UNSW Sydney. As a partnership between Allens and UNSW Law & Justice, the hub adds breadth and depth to research on the diverse interactions among technological change, law, and legal practice. The partnership enriches academic and policy debates and drives considered reform of law and practice through engagement with the legal profession, the judiciary, industry, government and the broader community.
Why Your Role Matters
As the Deputy Director you will work with the Director to provide strategic leadership for the Hub, through strategic planning, annual planning and budget forecasting. The Deputy Director will play a strong role in external engagement, working with Allens, with the legal profession more broadly and with government and regulators to enhance the impact of our research in both policy and practice for social benefit. The Deputy Director will also work with Hub members (including HDRs) and stream leaders to support their research and related outreach activities.
The role of Associate Professor and Deputy Director of the UNSW Allens Hub reports to their Head of School (formally) and to the Hub Director (with respect to UNSW Allens Hub work) and has no direct reports.
Responsibilities
Specific accountabilities for a Level D academic include (but are not limited to):
Apply a well-defined teaching philosophy and a critically reflective teaching practice that inspires student learning and cultivates a positive attitude towards teaching.
Engage in peer review and disseminate best-practice in education.
Conduct classes, assess student learning achievements, and support students in both postgraduate and undergraduate courses in line with UNSW policy as an exemplar for others.
Design and develop learning activities and resources, and provide assessment and feedback at both course and program level using a range of suitable approaches and learning environments.
Contribute to support strategies for learning progression that enable positive outcomes for students.
Contribute to the review, development and/or design of curriculum and manage curriculum administration as Course Authority, including academic quality assurance as required.
To support the Hub Director, specific accountabilities for the Deputy Director may include (but are not limited to):
Work with the Director to implement the strategic plan for the Hub consistent with the goals of university and faculty strategies.
Continuing to grow a significant national and international research profile for the UNSW Allens Hub as a leader in research at the intersection of law and technology, demonstrated through high-impact publications and competitive grant schemes success (categories 1-4).
Producing high-quality and high-value academic outputs, including success in gaining competitive grants, publication of peer-reviewed papers, and supervision of students (including Honours students and Hub interns).
Translating high-quality research into accessible outputs for policymakers, the media, civil society organisations and the general public.
Supporting and mentoring Hub members (including HDRs) in their research, including in the contexts of competitive grants; promoting the research and achievements of Hub members.
Representing the Hub and building strong engagement and collaboration between individuals, groups and Centres from across UNSW faculties, and with external partners and stakeholders, to ensure effective collaboration on Hub projects.
Who You Are
A PhD (or equivalent) in Law.
A distinguished record of scholarship and research leadership in related field, evidenced by qualifications or equivalent experience, an outstanding track record of publications in international recognised, peer reviewed journals and conferences, and demonstrated success in attracting diversified research funding.
Demonstrated experience providing effective leadership of collaborative, innovative research teams.
Demonstrated commitment to strong collegial leadership and a capacity to work with partners and stakeholders within and external to the Hub.
Ability to engage at a senior level with government, industry and community groups to develop long term collaborative research partnerships and translate research into tangible social benefits including policy impacts.
Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning design using a range of pedagogical approaches, development and delivery of courses and programs, at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
