Job Summary

The Centre for Learning and Teaching ( CLT ) works in partnership with academic units, faculty members, and graduate students to enhance the practice and scholarship of teaching and learning. The CLT is currently seeking an Executive Director who will provide leadership in advancing the goals of the unit.

Reporting to the Associate Vice-President, Academic, the Executive Director is a key member of the university’s academic leadership team and has overall responsibility for the CLT’s strategic plan, organizational structure, budget oversight, and space planning. The Executive Director leads a team of 15 professionals who deliver teaching and learning support to Dalhousie’s faculty and students. The Executive Director is responsible for developing effective and productive relationships with key leaders and departments and providing consultation to academic leaders to identify initiatives for teaching and learning to advance Dalhousie’s academic mission.

Key Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with the Associate Vice-President, Academic, to determine long-term strategic plans, and priorities for the CLT in keeping with the strategic academic plan for the university and other units at Dalhousie and overseeing the development and implementation of the strategic plan.
  • Embracing and advancing equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility as core to the work of the CLT and to learning and teaching at Dalhousie.
  • Advocating for the importance of teaching and educational development for faculty members, instructors, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students to enable teaching excellence, innovation, and inquiry, and, with the CLT team, developing programming in support of professional development related to teaching and learning for these groups.
  • Providing guidance, support, and mentorship to the Director and Manager, Administration and Operations and CLT staff to ensure talent management and development and effect team dynamics within a progressive and productive environment.
  • Planning and overseeing the budget to meet strategic goals and fiscal responsibilities with the support of the Manager, Administration and Operations.
  • Providing leadership within Dalhousie, regionally, and nationally on the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Note

Required Qualifications

  • A PhD.
  • A strong record of experience in the field of educational development and/or university teaching.
  • Progressive experience providing strategic leadership in the area of university teaching and learning.
  • Broad expertise in the areas of learning theory, curriculum design, development, production and evaluation.
  • Knowledge of current trends in higher education within the fields of curriculum development, instructor development, and educational technologies.
  • Strong leadership skills, including the ability to make decisions and plan for growth at operational and strategic levels.
  • The ability to achieve goals using collaborative and consultative processes.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills including group facilitation skills and the ability to build strong relationships across and within the university.
  • Experience leading a team of professionals alongside strong mentorship and supervision skills.
  • Adaptive decision-making skills, and the corresponding ability to adapt to and anticipate relevant change through planning.
  • Significant track record of education, professional development, and learning in the areas of equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility including as it relates to Indigenous and Black perspectives.
  • A strong understanding of the needs of diverse learners, and the ability to apply that learning productively as leader of the CLT .

Assets

  • A record of engagement and expertise as it relates to Indigenous perspectives, pedagogies, and Ways of Knowing.
  • Previous experience with budget management and other operational administrative skills.
