As the Laboratory Research Assistant, you will work your 8-month term at our Canfor Pulp Innovation laboratory in Burnaby, BC. You will be aligned with the pulp and paper research team and provide support for the quality control program and competitor pulp benchmarking initiatives. You will have the opportunity to conduct wet chemistry testing such as acetone extractions and analyses of lignin content, pH & conductivity and viscosity to complete the pulp profile. In addition, you will actively participate in the application of advanced techniques such as Raman Spectroscopy.
The life of a Laboratory Research Assistant (Co-op) Student includes:
- Operate key analytical instruments like fibre classifiers and multicomponent pulp property analyzers
- Conduct simulations of mill processes in a laboratory setting
- Evaluate pulp quality through pulp refining, drainage measurement, hand sheet preparation, testing and fibre analysis
- Problem solving involving equipment and investigating customer queries
- Assist in special projects such as pilot scale kraft pulping, mill scale fibreline audits, refining optimization and environmental impact related studies
For this role, you’ll come equipped with:
- Current enrollment Chemical/Material Engineering, Chemistry or Forestry Co-op Program
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills
