DAAD Postgraduate Study Scholarship in Music For International Students 2024

DAAD scholarships provide graduates with the chance to further their education in Germany through postgraduate or continuing education courses. These scholarships also encourage the exchange of experiences and networking among colleagues.

Program Details

In this study program, you have the option to:

• Complete a Master’s degree or a postgraduate degree that leads to a final qualification, or
• Enroll in a complementary course that does not lead to a final qualification (not an undergraduate course).
• At a selected German state college specializing in music.

Postgraduate studies can be undertaken in the 2nd cycle (typically a four-semester Master’s degree) or the 3rd cycle, which usually lasts two semesters (concert examination, masterclass, or PhD in an artistic subject).

This program funds projects exclusively in the artistic field. Other DAAD scholarship programs are available for applicants in musicology, music education, or those pursuing a scientific project in music.

Benefits

The following financial provisions and supplements are granted to the scholarship recipients:

• A recurring monthly stipend of 850 euros is provided.
• Recipients are entitled to a travel stipend.
• A single study allowance is awarded.
• Coverage for health, accident, and personal liability insurance is supported financially.

Under specific conditions, scholars might also be eligible for:

• A supplementary monthly housing stipend.
• An additional monthly allowance for any dependents accompanying the scholar.

To facilitate German language acquisition, which is essential for the residency, the DAAD provides the following services:

• The cost of the “Deutsch-Uni Online (DUO)” online language course (deutsch-uni.com) is covered for six months following the receipt of the Scholarship Award Letter.
• Conditional on the level of German proficiency and the project specifics, scholars might attend a German language course lasting 2, 4, or 6 months before their study commencement. The DAAD will determine the necessity and duration of this course, which is mandatory if German is the teaching or working language at the host institution.
• Scholars are allocated funds for a self-selected German language course during the scholarship tenure.
• The fees for the TestDaF examination, taken either in the home country after receiving the Scholarship Award Letter or in Germany before the funding concludes, are reimbursed.
• Alternatively, for scholars who have previously completed a language course, the expenses for a DSH examination taken during the scholarship duration can be refunded.

Eligibility Requirements

• Foreign applicants must have obtained a first university degree in Music by the start of their scholarship-supported program. If this is not possible, they should have completed all available training for their instrument in their home country.
• Applicants should have completed their final exams no more than six years before the application deadline.
• Each music college sets its age limits for admission, which may vary based on the applicant’s academic level and chosen field of study.
• Applicants who have lived in Germany for more than 15 months by the application deadline are ineligible.
• For those enrolled in a Master’s or postgraduate program that includes an overseas study period, funding for this period is usually granted only if:
• The study abroad is crucial for achieving the scholarship goals.
• The duration of the study abroad is no longer than a quarter of the total scholarship period. Extended periods cannot be funded, even in part.
• The study abroad does not occur in the applicant’s home country.
• Music applicants must have proficiency in the language of instruction required by the chosen university by the start of their scholarship. If they do not meet the language requirements at the time of application, their application should describe how they plan to achieve the necessary level. Once awarded the scholarship, applicants should utilize the funding opportunities outlined under “Value.”

Selection criteria

• The artistic qualification and maturity, are evaluated through academic performance and work samples.
• The quality of the project is assessed based on the study plan and motivation letter. This includes the rationale for the application, the project’s plausibility and feasibility, the preparation for the study abroad, the integration of the study abroad into the artistic career, and its alignment with professional goals.
